The Tulsa Police Department in conjunction with Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad and the Oklahoma Chapter of Operation Lifesaver will be conducting an educational enforcement zone on Friday May 9, 2008. We will be staging at 9:30 AM near the railroad tracks at Southwest Blvd. and 33rd W. Ave. This event will have officers and representatives from the railroad situated near several train crossings to hand out “goodie” bags of educational material and items from the BNSF railroad that will help remind drivers the dangers of railroad crossings.
Through the efforts of Operation Lifesaver, they have helped reduce collisions at railroad crossings by nearly 70 percent. Over 40 volunteers give free safety presentations throughout the state. Last year, they gave 787 safety presentations to 18,015 citizens. Today’s event is to help reinforce the laws around train tracks and to reward drivers for their good driving behavior at the crossings.
Further information on Oklahoma Operation Lifesavers can be obtained from their website at www.okoperationlifesaver.org.
“Stop the speeding on my street – NOW!” is one of the most urgent phone calls fielded by the Tulsa Police Department, the City of Tulsa, and officials nationwide. With warmer weather ahead, such complaints will only increase, as anxious parents and neighbors fear for the safety of children at play. That’s why dozens of communities across the country are proclaiming May 1, 2008 “Keep Kids Alive Drive 25 Day”, and raising awareness of the serious problem of speeding and distracted driving on neighborhood streets.
Most people speeding through neighborhoods are residents themselves. By sounding May Day alert, a call for help in the battle against residential speeding, people will recognize their role in the problem and become part of the solution instead of relying on police and speed bumps alone.
The Tulsa Police Department is concerned with this nationwide need and will always remain on alert to assist with the public’s request for assistance. The City of Tulsa can help provide signage for neighborhoods on promoting KEEP KIDS ALIVE Drive 25 program. For more information on this and traffic calming for neighborhoods, log on to www.cityoftulsa.org and click on the Community Programs and scroll down to Drive 25.

It will focus on neighborhood services and drunken driving.
The parent-teacher organization at Nathan Hale High School is sponsoring a community seminar Tuesday to bring together organizations that help keep Tulsa neighborhoods safe.
The seminar is meant for anybody concerned about neighborhood safety, but organizers hope that parents from Hale's particularly big Hispanic population will find the seminar useful.
"We really just want to get the word out, especially for that group," said Cindy Rutledge, a seminar organizer.
Information will be available in Spanish, and representatives from the Hispanic Resource Center at Martin Regional Library will be present.
Bringing together more than 20 service organizations at the same place and time will show the community what services are available and give information about how to get help, Rutledge said.
"That way, ignorance wouldn't be part of the issue," she said.
With the approach of prom season, the event also will present the dangers of drunken driving. Storey Wrecker Service will demonstrate the "jaws of life," a gadget that opens gaps in wrecked cars to allow the rescue of people inside, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving will have information available.
Rutledge said she hopes teenagers will pay particular attention to that part of the seminar.
"If that demonstration, just out there in the parking lot, saves one teen, then we've done our job," she said.

A local non-profit organization that provides refurbished computers to at-risk children, PC Power, the Tulsa Police Department, and area law enforcement agencies, have again partnered to deliver over 60 computers to children in the Tulsa area. During the week before Christmas, officers from Tulsa Police Department, Tulsa County Sheriff's Office, Broken Arrow, Sapulpa, Owasso, and Sand Springs Police Department will begin work on the Fifth Annual North Pole Computer Project. These computers will be used by approximately 200 children.
PC Power was founded by retired Tulsa Police Officer Glenn DeWeese, who began building computers for needy children as a Christmas project in 2003. The original Computers for Kids project evolved into a year-round operation that will provide computers for over 750 families this year. While there are officers who donate time throughout the year, all of the work of identifying recipients, wrapping and delivering the Christmas computers is done by police officers who work in the schools.
The 2007 North Pole Computer Project will culminate on December 21 when the police officers and volunteers will assemble at Tulsa's Fraternal Order of Police lodge to gift wrap the computers and load them in police cars for delivery. FOP President Darin Filak has endorsed the project and cites it as "another example of the many ways our officers are actively serving their community."
PC Power and their law enforcement partners ask for the community's help in continuing this important project. They will hold a computer drop-off on Saturday, December 1st, 10 am until 2 pm, in the west parking lot of CityPlex, 81st and Lewis. They need computers that are Pentium IV class or better. The minimum specifications can be found on PC Power's web site. Machines will be wiped and re-imaged very quickly using mass production techniques developed by PC Power's technicians. PC Power will also accept educational software and cash donations that go towards Microsoft licensing fees and the purchase of speakers and modems.
More information about the North Pole Computer Project and PC Power can be found on the web at www.TulsaPCPower.org

A fundraiser for a Tulsa police officer who is battling cancer will be held at a downtown pub and restaurant Thursday.
Officers and their families will attend the benefit for Detective Jim Smith, which begins at 5 p.m. at James E. McNellie's Public House, 409 E. First St. The public also is invited, Sgt. Mike Huff said.
All proceeds, including a $5 cover charge and a percentage of some beverage sales, will be donated to Smith and his family to ease the financial burden associated with his forthcoming medical treatment at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Smith has worked the graveyard shift as a Crime Scene Unit detective for several years, Cpl. Gene Watkins said. Recently he had not been sleeping well and appeared pale, and it was believed that the strain of the shift and the demands of the job may have been taking their toll.
When he went to the doctor, he was diagnosed with cancer, Watkins said.
Officer Jennifer Mansell is acting as hostess of the event. In September, a police fundraiser was held at McNellie's for Mansell, who is also battling cancer.
She serves as the city's downtown safety liaison, coordinating new programs and stepped-up patrols in the downtown area.

More than 15,000 passenger vehicle occupants died in traffic crashes between the nighttime hours of 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. during 2005, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) – and 59 percent of those passenger vehicle occupants were NOTwearing their seat belts at the time of the fatal crash.
The proportion of unbuckled deaths at night is considerably higher than the nearly as alarming 44 percent of passenger vehicle occupants who were not wearing their seat belts and were killed during the daylight hours across the nation that same year.
That’s why the Tulsa Police Department announced they are joining with state and local law enforcement and highway safety officials, May 21st through June 3rd, to launch an aggressive national "Click It or Ticket" seat belt enforcement mobilization to crack down on low seat belt use and to reduce highway and city fatalities.

Oklahoma Women in Law Enforcement honors Officers Robin Mendenhall and Danielle Bishop.
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma Women in Law Enforcement on Thursday honored two Tulsa police officers.
Officer Robin Mendenhall received the Commissioned Woman of the Year Award.
Officer Danielle Bishop received the Bull Dog Award.
Mendenhall, 29, was honored for pulling a woman out of the line of fire after the woman had been shot several times in 2005.
"I needed to get her to safety," Mendenhall said.
The most rewarding part of police work is getting a dangerous person off of the street and preventing people from being crime victims or getting hurt, she said.
Mendenhall, an officer with Uniform Division North, has been with the Tulsa Police Department for about five years.
She is a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and Northeastern State University, where she received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice.
Bishop has been with the Tulsa Police Department for 13 years. She is assigned to the Special Investigations Division's Vice Unit.
During 2006, she and her partner were responsible for 146 felony drug arrests, and they seized 16.67 pounds of marijuana, $4,745 worth of cocaine, $50,825 worth of methamphetamine and $60,760 in drug proceeds.
Bishop, 35, graduated high school in Edmond in 1989 and received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and sociology from Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, where she played volleyball.
Bishop said it means a lot to be nominated for an award by her co-workers.
She said police work has afforded her the opportunity to see a side of life most people never get to see.
People really don't have a concept of the dangers that officers face every day, Bishop said.
"It changes you," she said. "You look at things a different way."
Acting Police Chief Mark McCrory, who attended the awards ceremony in Oklahoma City, said, "Having two in our department honored by a statewide organization shows the quality of personnel we have."

Thanks to everyone for coming out to support Jennifer. She has expressed to me that she feels so loved and blessed to be surrounded and supported by all of you. It is a reflection on our entire department.
